Road Closed On Ala. Coast Due To Hurricane Ike
(2008-09-11)
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - Waves stirred up by Hurricane Ike have forced the closing of the Dauphin Island bridge and the eastbound lanes of the Mobile Bay Causeway.

Both were shut down Thursday morning due to high water.

Dauphin Island Mayor Jeff Collier says the power went out on the island Thursday morning and Dauphin Island Elementary School was closed due to the hurricane headed for Texas. School official expect it to reopen Friday.

Some minor beach erosion on the Alabama coast could occur through Saturday from Hurricane Ike's move into Texas, but emergency officials do not expect heavy rainfall.

The National Weather Service in Mobile has extended a coastal flood warning across the Mobile Bay until noon Saturday. Tides could be up to five feet above normal.
