More Blacks Registering To Vote in Ala.
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - State election officials say there has been an increase in voter registration by blacks in Alabama. And political observers say it stems from excitement surrounding Barack Obama's presidential bid.

The percentage of active registered voters who are black has risen from 24 percent to 25 percent since the last election. That's nearing the proportion of Alabama's black population, slightly more than 26 percent, according to the U.S. Census.

As of June 30, nearly 642,000 black voters had active registration.

Data from the secretary of state's office say that number is up by about 14,500 from 2004 and expected to increase even more by November. White active registration hasn't met its 2004 level, falling short by about 31,000 voters.
