Ala. Death Row InmateWho Challenged Protocol Dies MONTGOMERY, AL (APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - An Alabama death row inmate who had terminal cancer and was challenging the state's method of conducting lethal injections has died.

Alabama Department of Corrections spokesman Brian Corbett said 53-year-old Daniel Siebert was pronounced dead Tuesday afternoon. He said the precise cause of death will be determined later but it appeared related to his terminal pancreatic cancer.

Siebert came within a day of lethal injection last October before a federal appeals court stayed his execution until the U.S. Supreme Court decided on a Kentucky case involving that method of execution.

He was sentenced to death for the 1986 strangulation of his girlfriend and her two young sons and received a separate death sentence for killing his girlfriend's neighbor.

Siebert was also convicted of killing another Talladega woman and confessed to a number of other killings from California to New Jersey.
