Remains of Missing Vietnam War Airman Return Home
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - The remains of an Alabama Airman missing since the Vietnam War have been returned to his family for burial at Arlington National Cemetery.

The Pentagon said Lt. Col. Alton C. Rockett Jr. of Birmingham and his co-pilot, Captain Daniel L. Carrier, were flying a reconnaissance mission over North Vietnam when their F-4C fighter jet was shot down by enemy ground fire on June 2, 1967.

Local villagers reported in 1989 that they found the wreckage and the U.S. military later recovered those remains. But because of a mixup, it took forensics experts until 2006 to confirm Rockett's identify.

Rockett will be buried with full military honors on Monday at Arlington National Cemetery, near Washington, D.C.
