CHRIST CHURCH CHOIRS WILL PRESENT CHORAL EVENSONG NOV. 1
Christ Episcopal Church in Tuscaloosa, Ala., will present an All Saints’ Day choral evensong on Friday, Nov. 1 at 6:00 p.m. The evensong will remember and honor those who have died, especially those who died during the past year. Their names will be read during the service.
“Evensong is a musical setting of the service of evening prayer from the Book of Common Prayer, sometimes called vespers,” said Doff Procter, music director. “Music will be presented by Christ Church’s adult choir and by the St. Cecilia Singers.”
Featured in the musical program at the evensong service will be the traditional evening canticles “Magnificat” (My soul doth magnify the Lord) and “Nunc Dimittis” (Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace) from the Short Service by Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625).
The choirs will begin the service with “O Gracious Light” (Phos hilaron) by David Hogan. The adult choir will also sing three anthems including “The Souls of the Righteous,” from the Book of Wisdom, by Mark Schweizer; “You Hold All Souls in Life,” from the Book of Common Prayer, by Alfred V. Fedak, and “Sing Unto the Lord,” from Psalm 30, by Christopher Tye.
The St. Cecilia Singers will offer “God Be in My Head” by Carol McClure.
Other music will include congregational hymns “For all the saints, who from their labors rest,” “I sing a song of the saints of God,” and “Ye watchers and ye holy ones,” as well as the chanting of Psalm 149.
The Christ Church adult choir is made up of parishioners and University of Alabama students. Music director is Doff Procter, and organist is Donald Given. The St. Cecilia Singers include students in grades 3-5.
Rector of Christ Episcopal Church is the Reverend David Meginniss. Associate rector is the Reverend Dr. Catherine Collier.
