A new musical drama for children, Hermitage Cats Save the Day, will premiere at the University of Alabama’s Moody Concert Hall on March 6, 2013 at 6:00pm. The new jazz score, composed by Chris Brubeck, will involve audience participation. A Grammy-nominated composer and multi-talented son of Dave Brubeck, Chris is an accomplished trombonist, bassist and vocalist, in addition to his achievements as a composer in jazz and classical genres.
Featuring an ensemble of ten musicians and three actors, the production will be staged by the well-known local theater director Paul Looney. Two local artists—Diane Schultz (flute) and Dawn Sandel (guitar and vocals)—are members of the ensemble that will travel to Washington, DC and St. Petersburg, Russia for subsequent performances of Hermitage Cats. Two Russian artists—Maxim Rubtsov (flute) and Vladislav Lavrik (trumpet and conductor) will appear in leading roles. Additional members of the cast of the musicians and actors will be drawn from University of Alabama School of Music faculty, students and the local community.
