MTT finds new ways to tell the orchestra "Sssshhhhh". More than 350 musicians are heard on a new recording of the Mahler Symphony No. 8 with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas. Mahler may call for large musical forces, but Michael Tilson Thomas (aka MTT) says Mahler doesn't always ask them all to play forcefully.

Listen to Michael Tilson Thomas by clicking next to "Listen" above.

Visit the San Francisco Symphony's excellent website by clicking here to learn more about the project. On the right side of the website, scroll down to "A Universe of Sound: Recording Mahler's Symphony No. 8" to watch a remarkable video of the making of the Mahler 8 recording -- and definitely wait for the magical moment about 5 minutes into the 7 minute video.
