In celebration of the 62nd Annual Edgar® Awards for mystery writing, The Cornell Savoyards present A Sensation Novel (book by W.S. Gilbert, music by Michael Nash and Arthur Sullivan, adapted by Ithaca native Melissa Snyder) on May 9-11, 2008, at the Andrew Dickson White House, an atmospheric Victorian mansion built on the Cornell University campus in 1871, the same year A Sensation Novel was written. A Sensation Novel is a biting satire of the Victorian "sensation" genre of mystery novels popularized by such authors as Wilkie Collins, Charles Dickens, and Arthur Conan Doyle. It hilariously combines crime, romance, the supernatural, lively music, and bizarre plot twists that would make Agatha Christie's eyes cross! The cast features Thom Baker, Nola Booth, Robin Booth, William Christoffels, Jessica Flood, Lisa Frank, Doug Mathews, and Melissa Snyder. Musical director Richard Montgomery will be at the piano, assisted by Carol Oddy on cello. Costume designer Susan Ely has created a rare visual treat with her detailed period clothing.
The Cornell Savoyards have been delighting Ithaca audiences since 1953. The group was formed to perform and promote the operettas of Gilbert and Sullivan, and related works. Over the years its membership has included students, faculty, and staff from Cornell and Ithaca College; and members of the greater Ithaca community.
