Glimmerglass Opera has announced its repertory for the 2010 Festival Season. Puccini's Tosca, Copland's The Tender Land, Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro and the American professionally-staged premiere of Handel's Tolomeo will run in repertory in the Alice Busch Opera Theater, July 9 through August 24, 2010.
The operas will be presented in new productions, with sets designed by Donald Eastman. Tosca will open the season July 9, followed by The Tender Land on July 10. The Marriage of Figaro will open July 17, and Tolomeo will open July 18. In 2010, all four operas will be running in rotation by July 18 – two weeks earlier than in previous years.
"For the first time in Glimmerglass's history, audience members will be able to see all four operas beginning in mid-July," said Michael MacLeod, Glimmerglass Opera General & Artistic Director. "We hope the additional two weeks with all four operas up and running will attract new opera-goers who, for whatever reason, have not been able to attend in August."
Written for young singers, The Tender Land will feature members of the Young American Artists Program, the company's apprenticeship program for young singers. Music Director Emeritus Stewart Robertson, who founded the Young American Artists Program in 1988, will return to conduct a cast selected entirely from the 2010 Young American Artists Program. Music Director David Angus will conduct Tosca and The Marriage of Figaro.
Subscriptions to the 2010 Festival Season go on sale July 18, 2009. For more information on Glimmerglass Opera, visit www.glimmerglass.org. The Alice Busch Opera Theater, home of Glimmerglass Opera, is located on Route 80, eight miles north of Cooperstown, New York.
