The Catskill Choral Society, under the direction of Dr. Timothy Newton, will perform David Fanshawe's African Sanctus at 7:30 P.M. Saturday, May 8, and 3 P.M. Sunday, May 9, in the Hunt Union Ballroom. The event is co-sponsored by SUNY College at Oneonta.
The voices of the Choral Society and Girl Choir will be joined by the SUNY Oneonta Chamber Singers and the World and Classical Percussion ensembles, as well as choirs from Oneonta's Center Street, Valleyview, and Greater Plains elementary schools.
Metropolitan Opera National Finalist Lorraine Hinds is the guest soloist and Timothy Horne is the piano accompanist.
African Sanctus is a setting of the Latin Mass harmonized with African music recorded by the composer on his journeys up the Nile River. Taped music from Egypt, Sudan, Uganda and Kenya is played in counterpoint with the live choruses, soprano soloist, and instrumental ensembles of piano and percussion.
The work consists of 13 movements that reflect the composer's cross-shaped pilgrimage from the Mediterranean Sea to Lake Victoria, a journey that is represented visually during the performance with slide projections.
Expressing unity between people, their faiths and, above all, their music, African Sanctus has been performed world-wide to international acclaim, but this will be its first regional presentation.
Tickets for the concerts are available in Oneonta at Artware and Green Earth; in Sidney at Corky's Wines & Spirits; in Cooperstown at Augur's Book Store; and in Unadilla at Country Computers and Publishing.
