The Schorr Family Firehouse Stage presents an afternoon of romance, featuring Maestro John Covelli, with percussionists Joel Smales, Cayenna Ponchione, and Gordon Stout, this Sunday, February 14 at 2:00 PM. This event is the second of three performances in the 2009-10 Classical Piano Plus! Series.

This Valentine's Day performance promises beguiling classical melodies and exotic Marimba rhythms. The program will include compositions by Busoni, Beethoven, Debussy, Chopin, and Werle, as well as "Stubernik" by Mark Ford and the Marimba Concerto of Ney Rosauro.

A Chicago-born piano prodigy studying since age four, Covelli has received rave reviews worldwide as a piano virtuoso and as a conductor and composer. A reviewer in Berlin described him as, "One of the rare musicians who connects intelligence with expressive feeling and exuberance." Local audiences remember him most as the conductor of the Binghamton Philharmonic for many years.

For this special Valentine's Day presentation, Covelli will be joined by three percussionists: Gordon Stout, Joel Smales, and Cayenna Ponchione. Gordon Stout is Director of Percussion at Ithaca College and a frequent lecture-recitalist for the Percussive Arts Society. Joel Smales is Head of Percussion at Binghamton High School and Principal Percussionist with the Tri-Cities Opera Orchestra. Cayenna Ponchione directs the Binghamton Community Orchestra and the Ithaca Community Orchestra.
