Illegal Dump Cleanup Begins
(2008-09-18)
(wsiu) - The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency is working to clear up an illegal dump site in Jackson County, and workers hope to be done by the end of the month.
The IEPA started the clean-up this week at a site along Macedonia Road near Pomona.
Spokesperson Maggie Carson says the IEPA will remove debris, plastic, tires and various household wastes. She says the removal of illegal dumps is a public health issue.
Carson says the clean-up near Pomona is funded through the state's I-RID program...which has cleaned up around 200 sites from Cave-In-Rock to Chicago since it began in 2006.
She says residents can help reduce the number of illegal dumps by finding a waste hauler to dispose of their trash safely or by doing more recycling.
