Attorney General to Investigate Gas Price Gouging Claims
Spokeswoman Robyn Ziegler says the office has received several consumer complaints of retail gasoline price spikes in southern Illinois and around the Springfield area. Ziegler says it's unclear at this point whether the increases reflect market forces or whether some retailers are unfairly taking advantage of market jitters in the wake of Hurricane Ike.
Investigators are monitoring the reported price increases, seeking to determine if they are justified.
Attorney General Lisa Madigan has established two tip lines for consumers who suspect they are being gouged at the pump: 800-243-0618 in Springfield and 800-243-0607 in Carbondale.
