Ike Causes Gas Prices to Rise
(2008-09-12)
(wsiu) - Motorists need to prepare for gas prices to continue to rise for the next several days.
That's according to Bill Fleischli - executive director of the Illinois Petroleum Marketers Association.
He says hurricane Ike's fierce winds could damage oil refineries along the gulf coast of Texas, leading to higher gas prices at the pump. In fact, prices took a dramatic jump overnight, causing a mad dash to gas pumps as people tried to fill up before the prices increased.
Fleischli says he understands the concerns of consumers, but he says panic buying is not the answer.
Fleischli says the prices are going up so quickly in response to Ike because the gulf coast is getting battered by multiple storms.
He says prices should start to stabilize in the next five to seven days once we learn what kind of damage is done to the refineries.
