Lawmakers Consider Restoring Cuts to State Parks and Historic Sites
(2008-09-10)
(wsiu) - Critics of the decision to close dozens of the state's parks and historic sites are supporting measures that would restore budget cuts.

Representative Bob Flider of Decatur says he can't understand why the Governor is citing economic reasons for the park closings. Flider says they raise money through camping fees and support the local economy through sales tax revenue.

Another critic says the cuts will boost tourism ... but in Illinois' neighboring states.

Eleven state parks and 13 historic sites are set to close within the next few months unless the cuts are restored. Most workers at the sites will be laid off.

Blagojevich says he had no choice because the state's budget was unbalanced.
