Murphysboro Apple Fest Goes Green
(2008-09-10)
(wsiu) - The apples at the Murphysboro Apple Festival may be greener than in years past. The festival has made moves to make this year's festival more environmentally friendly.

In conjunction with the Illinois Department of Corrections the Festival will work to recycle vegetable oil and turn it into cleaner burning bio-diesel. Recycled vegetable oil from other fairs in the state will be powering the trucks in the Murphysboro parade.

Festival Chairman Mike Ruiz saw this as a win-win situation for people attending this year's celebration.

The festival staff welcomes any other ideas to make the Apple Fest more energy efficient. They encourage volunteers with ideas to call the Murphysboro chamber of commerce to get in touch with the organizers.

The 57th annual festival runs from Wednesday through Sunday.
