AFSCME Concerned About Worker Safety at Tamms Supermax Prison
(2009-11-20)
(wsiu) - The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees union has only one concern at Tamms Supermax Correctional Center... and that is safety.

AFSCME Regional Director Eddie Caumiant says even the inmates at Tamms Prison know the guards are overworked. Caumiant was present when one inmate raised the concern while talking with reporters.

Caumiant says he agrees with Gov. Pat Quinn that a tax increase is necessary in order to fully staff state prisons. The increase would also help pay a backlog of bills the state has accumulated.

Many outside groups have also raised concerns that overworked guards could present a security issue.
