Shimkus to Testify Before House Ethics Committee
(2006-10-13)
(Chicago Public Radio) - The Southern Illinois congressman who heads the congressional page program is scheduled to testify today before the House Ethics Committee.

Representative John Shimkus is expected to discuss when and what he knew about emails sent by former Representative Mark Foley to teenage pages. Shimkus has come under fire from Democrats for not alerting other members of the Page Board about Foley's behavior.

A Shimkus spokesperson says the congressman told Foley to stop contacting the pages. He says Shimkus decided not to go further in an effort to maintain the privacy requested by the family of a former page.

Still unknown is whether House Speaker Dennis Hastert will be called before the panel investigating the matter. That panel is made up of two Democrats and two Republicans, including Representative Judy Biggert from Chicago's western suburbs.
