(Associated Press) -

Michigan's unemployment rate increased to 8.9 percent in August.

That's four-tenths of a percentage point higher than in July.

The state Department of Labor and Economic Growth announced Wednesday that the seasonally adjusted jobless rate increased after holding steady at 8.5 percent for three months.

Michigan's jobless rate a year ago was 7.2 percent.

Michigan has had the nation's highest average annual unemployment rate since 2006. The national jobless rate for August was 6.1 percent.
