Devaney has served as the inspector general for the Department of the Interior since August 1999. He has transformed the Office of Inspector General into an innovative organization dedicated not only to detecting fraud, waste, abuse and mismanagement within the Department of the Interior, but also to assist the Department in identifying and implementing new and better ways of conducting business.

Devaney began his law enforcement career in 1968 as a police officer in his native state of Massachusetts and later became a special agent with the United States Secret Service. Upon leaving the Secret Service, he became the director of criminal enforcement for the U.S. Environment Protection Agency.
