Commissioner Gist explains Race to the Top

Last year, when Rhode Island was applying for and eventually won a federal Race to the Top grant, many teachers raised concerns. They worried in particular about calls for teacher evaluations based 51 percent on evidence of student achievement, which many people interpreted to mean test scores. Just over a year later, Rhode Island is implementing those new teacher reviews. And the standardized test scores? They don't even come into the evaluation for nearly 80 percent of teachers. Rhode Island Public Radio's Elisabeth Harrison asked State Education Commissioner Deborah Gist what happened to the 51 percent.
