The plan for avoiding costly ER visits
(2012-02-16)
(RIPR) - Roughly 90% of the ambulance rides in Providence are unnecessary. That's one of the findings in the final report on keeping Rhode Islanders out of costly emergency rooms.

The report is the result of a special Senate commission which has been meeting since early November, trying to find ways to reduce unnecessary trips to the ER. Among the recommendations-

-Temporarily alter the state's regulations on where intoxicated Rhode Islanders can be treated, allowing for detox spaces outside of hospitals.

-Create a 24 hour response system for treating and transporting Rhode Islanders who don't necessarily need an ambulance ride

-Train health care providers and first responders to better identify patients with mental health needs.

The co-chairs of the Senate Committee expect to introduce legislation related to the recommendations within the next week.
