Students from 3rd through 8th grades and 11th grade take the NECAP, and 73 percent of them achieved proficiency or higher in reading, and 56 percent in math. Those are slightly up. In writing, 55 percent achieved proficiency or higher, a slight drop.
The standouts were the state's middle schools, which saw gains in both math and reading by three and four percentage points. NECAP scores for elementary students remained the same and high school students' math scores dropped by three percentage points.
Achievement gaps in reading between black and white students and Hispanic and white students were nearly the same as last year. While the gap between Hispanic and white students in math grew.
