Majority of Rhode Islanders support medical marijuana dispensaries
(2012-02-03)
(RIPR) - Seventy percent of Rhode Islanders believe Governor Lincoln Chafee should lift his hold on the state's medical marijuana retail stores. That's one of the findings from a new poll by the left leaning group Public Policy Polling.

The Marijuana Policy Project commissioned the poll that found Rhode Islanders are overwhelming supportive of the state's medical marijuana program. More than seventy percent said they approved of making the drug available to patients. A similar percentage said Chafee should open the state's so called compassion Centers and nearly half said they'd have a higher opinion of him if he did.

Chafee put the state's medical marijuana dispensary program on hold after he received a warning from U.S. Attorney Peter Neronha that the stores would be vulnerable to raids and federal prosecution. The poll surveyed more than 700 registered voters, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.7 percent.
