The advocacy group Marriage Equality Rhode Island, MERI, says an amendment introduced by North Providence rep Arthur Corvese is overly broad. MERI says the amendment would prevent a civil union partner from making medical decisions for a spouse being treated at a religiously affiliated hospital.
Fourteen reps have signed onto a letter to Governor Lincoln Chafee and legislative leaders, asking that the so-called "Corvese amendment" be removed.
Corvese declined comment for this report.
The General Assembly is expected to pass a civil union bill before it concludes its session.
