URI President condemns hateful acts on campus
(2011-02-24)
(RIPR) - University of Rhode Island President David Dooley says he's received positive reaction from his memo sent campus-wide condemning hateful acts. Dooley was especially disturbed by a defaced poster of Martin Luther King Jr and harassment of some gay students.

Dooley says it wasn't just one act, but many over time that prompted him to send the memo. He says hateful acts are cropping up at colleges across the country. And at URI, creating a culture of civility is a primary goal.

"It got to the point where I thought it was important to us to make a statement now," says Dooley. "To stay ahead of the curve, that's our goal."

URI is taking steps to improve the status of its gay students, says Dooley, and increase the diversity of faculty and staff.
