Gustav problems plague DSS
(2008-09-12)
(wrkf) - One state agency has been at the heart of two of the more significant disaster response problems to show up with Hurricane Gustav, and Governor Bobby Jindal says the snafus were avoidable and unacceptable.

The state social services department one of Jindal's cabinet agencies has received criticism for lengthy lines and lack of preparation for the thousands of people who showed up seeking disaster food stamp aid earlier this week. Some of the food stamp sites were so overwhelmed that people who waited for hours were sent home without aid.

Since then, the problems have been largely resolved.

But the department overseeing the program was the same in charge of setting up shelters before Gustav, including four shelters in north Louisiana where portable showers didn't arrive on time for evacuees and too few bathrooms were provided.

Jindal says preparation plans weren't handled properly in both instances, and the governor's complaints are leading to questions about the future of Social Services Secretary Ann Williamson.

Jindal says there will be consequences for people who didn't meet his expectations during Gustav, but he says he won't make those types of decisions until after the threat of Hurricane Ike is resolved.
