Grand jury to probe Taser death
(2008-07-28)
(wrkf) - A grand jury in central Louisiana is expected to weigh criminal charges against a former police officer who allegedly jolted a handcuffed man nine times with a Taser before the suspect died.

Winn Parish District Attorney Chris Nevils announced Monday that the grand jury is scheduled to convene on August 12 and begin hearing evidence in the death of 21-year-old Baron Pikes.

Scott Nugent was arresting Pikes on a warrant for drug possession in January when he used the 50,000-volt Taser on him.

The city of Winnfield fired Nugent in May, but he is appealing. Last month, a coroner ruled that Pikes' death was a homicide.
