Former Gov. Says He's Never Seen Such a Mess in Springfield
The former Illinois governor told news broadcasters meeting in Springfield over the weekend that he thinks Governor Rod Blagojevich is only part of the problem. He blames Democratic legislative leaders for feuding so bitterly that they can't unite to push the governor in the right direction.
The Republican Edgar says he doesn't see much hope for progress until voters choose a new governor. And he says that new governor will face some tough challenges.
Edgar told the Illinois News Broadcasters Association convention that the next governor will need to restore public trust in state government. But he says it will be hard to do that, and push solutions to the state's budget problems that will likely be unpopular. Edgar hinted he thinks those solutions might include a tax increase.
