Rotary Club Seeks End to Polio
(2007-12-12)
(wqub) - The Evanston-based Rotary Foundation has received a 100-million dollar grant to help eliminate polio. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation donated the money.

Dr. Robert Scott is Rotary's chairman. He says the disease's eradication is nearly complete, but more needs to be done.

"My hope is that governments will see that with this sincerity of the private sector they will come to the table and come with the rest of the funds so that we can finish the job."

Scott says Rotary will use the money to expand polio vaccination projects in India, Nigeria and other countries where the disease is prevalent.
Rotary hopes to match the grant through a three year fund raising initiative.
