Ryan's Prison
(2007-11-09)
(wqub) - RYANBEZ

Former Illinois Governor George Ryan is moving to rural central Wisconsin today [Wednesday] to begin serving a 6 and a half year sentence for fraud and racketeering.

As Gil Halsted of Wisconsin Public Radio reports, Oxford federal prison is actually two facilities in one.

The Oxford Prison Camp where Ryan is expected to serve his sentence houses about 200 low security prisoners.
It's off a county road at the top of a wooded hill outside the small town of Oxford. , population 536.
The dormitories where inmates live look a lot like military barracks.
The camp is adjacent to the larger medium security Oxford prison that holds about a thousand inmates.
Ryan requested to be placed at Oxford because of its relative proximity to his home in Kankakee , in central Illinois . His attorneys argued that the Oxford location would make family visits easier.

From Madison , Wisconsin , I'm Gil Halsted.
