Fingerprint Gas Buying
(2007-11-05)
(wqub) - The future is now... at least it is at 10 gas stations around Chicago. Shell Oil is outfitting gas pumps with fingerprint technology.
Chris Suess is with Shell.
He says a screen on each pump will prompt customers how to pay with their fingerprint.

"It takes a picture of your finger. You hold your finger there for about two to three seconds. It will advise you when its got a good scan of your fingerprint. It will ask you to lift your finger and then it will ask you for your personal search code."
The code is your phone number and that links the gas pump to your credit card or checking account.
Suess says Chicago is the first city in the world to have fingerprint pay-at-the-pump.
He says Chicago's harsh climate makes it a good place to see how well the technology holds up under extreme conditions.
