Illinois Schools Could Get Less Money
(2007-10-30)
(wqub) - Illinois schools could be in for a bad surprise next month if state lawmakers don't take quick action. The State Board of Education says aid payments to more than two thirds of all districts will be reduced in November unless technical legislation is approved allowing higher funding levels. The Senate has already passed the measure... but it's held up in the House amid other issues.

Ben Schwarm represents schools across the state and says the entire situation is causing frustration for local school leaders...

The State will recalculate its school funding formula beginning with the November payments. So far this year... payments have been at a higher amount in anticipation of the General Assembly signing off on the legislation. The State School Superintendent says this week is the deadline for action. If not.. some districts could lose out on hundreds of thousands of dollars each month.. .and that could force a cut in services. Both the House and Senate return to Springfield later this week.
