Facelift for Illinois Licenses
(2007-10-24)
(wqub) - Illinois drivers licenses and ID cards are getting a security makeover.

The Secretary of State's office unveiled the newly designed cards Tuesday.

Dennis Krier of the secretary's office says the cards are better at protecting against identity theft.

And new microtext, laser and UV features make the card difficult to counterfeit.

"Law enforcement will know right away that the card was made fraudulently or where the material was sent to to be made. So it's like tying the material to the individual to our database."

The new cards are currently available only at the Secretary of State's office in Melrose Park.

All licensing facilities should have them by the end of January.

Current license holders don't need to get a new one until their old license expires.
