Veto Session Doesn't Resolve Big Issues
(2007-10-19)
(wqub) - The Illinois General Assembly finishes its annual veto session last week ... but left plenty of loose ends. Amanda Vinicky reports:

A litany of matters are unresolved.

"Well, we've left a lot on the table. We haven't taken care of education funding. We haven't taken care of transportation and capitol bills. We haven't taken care of ... well there's so much left undone, what can I say?"

That's Democratic State Representative Jack Franks.

He says the gridlock's due to the governor and legislative leaders' failure to reach compromise. They aren't even talking.

"It's about politics at its worse. It's not about policy it's about ego. And everyone is suffering as a result. I'm from Woodstock ... and we filmed Groundhog day there. And it feels a lot like Groundhog day here. We endlessly repeating the same process hoping for a different result."

It's likely lawmakers will be called back in the next few weeks to try again. Schools say they need budget matters settled by the beginning of November. That's also when the Chicago Transit Authority has said it will eliminate routes and raise fares unless the legislature provides a bailout. Lawmakers are also debating whether or not they should allow new casinos in Illinois in order to pay for a statewide infrastructure program.
