Daley Says Marathon Troubles Won't Affect Olympic Bid
(2007-10-10)
(wqub) - Chicago Mayor Richard Daley says bad publicity over problems at Sunday's marathon won't impact the city's bid for the 20-16 Olympics.
Unseasonal heat forced the marathon to end early -- and hundreds of runners were sent to hospitals.
But Daley says athletes in the Olympics operate on a different level.

"You have elite runners. Elite runners are different from average marathon runner(s). It's like day and night. It's completely different."

The mayor wouldn't say if he thought the annual Chicago Marathon should be a smaller event.
He says that decision is up to organizers.
Daley also didn't criticize race officials.
He says they've admitted more water should have been provided for runners.
