Illinois Property Tax Relief Stalls
7PerOR-1
Another issue may be caught in the tailspin of Illinois government. This time ... its property tax relief.
Amanda Vinicky reports:
In order to help Cook County residents in developing neighborhoods cope with rising property values ... and the subsequent rise in property taxes ... the General Assembly passed a measure.
It limits for the next few years the annual growth of qualifying property owners' tax bills to seven percent.
The measure passed overwhelmingly ... and was the result of months of compromising.
But Governor Rod Blagojevich threw a wrench in the system. He wants to give residents a bigger tax break ... and permanently.
The Illinois House voted to reject those changes.
But the Senate must agree. But that chamber passed a new measure matching Blagojevich's version.
Democratic Representative Harry Osterman of Chicago says the governor and legislative leaders need to stop bickering and cooperate.
"I am incredibly frustrated with the way this is being dealt with"
Osterman says lawmakers must pass some form of tax relief
The House and Senate could each still take up the other chamber's measure.
