Illinois Schools Could Soon Have Moment of Silence
(2007-10-04)
(wqub) - Illinois public schools are a step closer to being required to hold a period of "silent reflection" before the start of each school day. The Illinois Senate overrode a gubernatorial veto Wednesday. The measure would expand current law... which permits schools to hold such sessions if they choose. By forcing all schools to comply... Evanston Democrat Jeff Schoenberg says it's a slippery slope....

But the sponsor...Democrat Kim Lightford of Chicago... denies any effort to bring religion into schools....

The House could consider the legislation next week.
