Join "Backstage Pass" host Julia Figueras as she welcomes Bonita Boyd and Nicholas Goluses.

by WXXI-FM's Julia Figueras

Host Julia Figueras invites Professor of Flute, Bonita Boyd and Professor of Guitar, Nicholas Goluses into the Henry Epstein Studio for a new season of Backstage Pass. The pair will perform and talk with Julia about their experiences teaching and touring.

Bonita Boyd's teachers have included Joseph Mariano, principal flute of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and legendary pedagogue at the Eastman School. Boyd succeeded him in both posts – becoming the youngest woman to hold major academic and orchestral appointments. She tours regularly with guitarist Nicholas Goluses, and the pair recorded and released a CD titled Chronicles of Discovery. Boyd served as principal flute with the Rochester Philharmonic (1971-1984) and has been an Eastman faculty member since 1977.

Nicholas Goluses, an Eastman faculty member since 1993, is professor of guitar, director of the guitar programs, and chairman of the string department. The Eastman School is widely recognized as one of the world's premier music schools and a leading center for guitar study. He is also a teacher of master classes at leading conservatories and universities throughout the world. Goluses has held the Andrés Segovia Faculty Chair at the Manhattan School of Music, where he received the Doctor or Musical Arts degree, and was the recipient of both the Pablo Casals Award "for musical accomplishment and human endeavor" and the Faculty Award of Distinguished Merit, confirming his love of and commitment to teaching.

Backstage Pass is a live, hour-long radio series that is committed to highlighting performing artists– giving Classical 91.5/90.3 listeners the opportunity to hear local and visiting musicians performing live. The series is made possible in part by a grant from the Gouvernet Arts Fund at Rochester Area Community Foundation.
