(wqcs) - I hope it's not too late to congratulate the Sebastian River High School girls basketball team for winning Florida's Class 7A championship. I was waiting to see how the Vero Beach High School boys team did a week later in the Class 8A Final Four. Alas, the Vero Beacg boys lost to Oviedo-Hagerty in the semi-final. Back to those Sebastian River girls. The Sharks - love the name -- beat Haines City High School 50-46 in a hard-fought contest at the Lakeland Center. Sebastian River trailed the entire first half. It looked like Haines City, which beat Sebastian River in December, would do it again. But the Sharks found their groove in the fourth quarter after Brittany Jackson and Merkeyia Jones hit back-to-back 3-pointers to put them ahead. The following Monday, Coach Terri Amy came to the school's victory rally with her long hair dyed blue. She had promised the players she would do that if they won the state. This was the first state title for the program in its 18-year history. In fact, it was the first time Sebastian River made the Final 4 in any team sport. So to the Vero Beach boys team, I say better luck next year. And to the Sebastian River girls team, I say good job! The Treasure Coast is proud of you. For 88.9 FM, this is Paul Janensch.
