Dr. Menninger, one of the worlds greatest tropical plant authors whose endearing writing style has made his books world classics and required study for any plant aficionado. Menninger's personal beliefs and anthropomorphic writing about plants draws the reader into understanding more about the mysterious world of plant behavior. Any history of Dr. Edwin Menninger must also include his association with Stuart, Florida.
Edwin Menninger arrived in Stuart in 1923 in order to start a newspaper, The Stuart News. He was also part of a group of citizens who established Martin County as an entity in itself. Menninger helped to make Stuart and Florida a tropical paradise with many of the trees, including the hundreds of Tabebula (yellow trumpet) trees that now exist are part of his legacy. The Menninger Park in Stuart (1299 SE Ocean Boulevard) is named after him.
