Ranchers offset carbon for climate exchange
Stumbough says right now payments for offsetting carbon are low - about 30 cents an acre each year on rangeland. But he says those payments should grow when the economy improves. He says two ranchers in Wyoming have already started receiving payments from the climate exchange.

WHEATLAND, WY
(wpr) -
About 30 ranchers in southeastern Wyoming have applied to start offsetting carbon on their land. Grant Stumbough with the U.S. Department of Agriculture says the Chicago Climate Exchange is looking for ranchers to store more atmospheric carbon in their soil. Ranchers can do that by not tilling their land, or by reforesting or planting grass. Businesses can then buy those carbon credits to offset carbon they've released. Stumbough says right now payments for offsetting carbon are low - about 30 cents an acre each year on rangeland. But he says those payments should grow when the economy improves. He says two ranchers in Wyoming have already started receiving payments from the climate exchange.
