Huge amount of heroin seized on I-80
(2008-09-05)
(wpr) - The Wyoming Highway Patrol seized more
than 11 pounds of heroin from a motorist who was pulled over on Interstate 80 for driving over the speed limit.

Sgt. Steve Townsend says it's the biggest heroin bust in recent memory and possibly the biggest ever in Wyoming.

A trooper stopped the driver of a Nissan Altima about two miles east of Elk Mountain last Friday.

The trooper's drug dog alerted to the odor of drugs in the car, leading officers to heroin stashed in a hidden compartment. Townsend says the drug was in a pure white powder form, known as "China White," which is generally considered the most refined and potent form. Authorities estimate the load's street value at a minimum of $10 million.

The driver of the car, 32-year-old Sergei P. Ludwig of Elizabeth, N.J., is charged with felony possession of a controlled
substance.
