Rockies Report Card: Fire Risk in Wyoming
(2007-04-19)
(wpr) - Wyoming and other Rocky Mountain States should look carefully at where to spend money on fire suppression. That's the advice from Colorado College researcher Matt Reuer. He helped edit the 2007 State of the Rockies Report Card, which highlights counties that are in danger of large fires. Both Teton County and Sheridan County made the list of troubled spots. Reuer says thinning trees and doing prescribed burns will help.
"I think they're wonderful solutions and they're solutions that we're implementing here in Colorado. But the question I always come back to is can we really afford to do this on a massive scale?"
For that reason, Reuer says he hopes the report will help land managers decide where to best spend their money to thin trees.
