Committee passes two juvenile justice bills CHEYENNE, WY (wpr) - In an effort to improve Wyoming's juvenile justice system, the legislature's Joint Judiciary Committee passed two bills today. One would set up a uniform system for assessing where a minor should be placed if arrested. The other bill would set up a nationally accredited standard for juvenile detention facilities.

The executive director of the Wyoming Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs, Byron Oedekoven, says his organization is in favor of these ideas. But the committee expanded the requirements for developing standards for detention facilities. Oedekoven says the scope of the bills has grown well beyond what they originally envisioned it to be.

Several groups argued that there is a strong need for standards for juvenile detention facilities to ensure that minors are treated well and treated equally across the state.
