State senator takes umbrage with Governor's letter
(2010-07-29)
(wpr) - A State Senator from Cody says that the governor is off base in his assertion that a legislative committee revising the school funding model is not tying student performance to funding. Senator Hank Coe is co-chairman of a committee looking at revising the model. Governor Dave Freudenthal wrote Coe and fellow chairman Del McComie expressing concern that the committee is not hearing from enough people who have an interest in education. Freudenthal also says that the committee has not undertaken comprehensive discussions requiring that funding be based on student performance. But Coe says that is exactly what the committee is trying to do,
"The biggest item out there is student achievement. We've put all this money into education, our remediation rates are about where they were 5 years ago. Are we going to tie that to funding? Absolutely."
Coe adds that the committee is still gathering input and has monthly meetings planned to develop the new funding model.
