Investigation continues in Grand Teton death
(2010-07-28)
(wpr) - Grant Teton National Park rangers are investigating whether a properly attached climbing rope could have prevented the only fatality during last week's rescue of 16 people off Grand Teton mountain.

Rangers told the Jackson Hole News & Guide that they're examining whether 21-year-old Brandon Oldenkamp, of Sanborn, Iowa, attached the climbing rope to a gear loop on his harness instead of a point designed to hold his weight.

Those with Oldenkamp told rangers he appeared to be securely attached to his harness when he fell near the summit of the 13,770-foot peak.

Ninety-two rescuers spent about nine hours rescuing 16 others who were injured by an intense thunderstorm that hit the peak July 21.
