Missing man found dead in Grand Teton
(2010-07-22)
(wpr) - The climber missing in Grand Teton National Park was found dead this morning. He and several others were near the top of the Grand Teton yesterday when they were caught in a thunderstorm. Park spokeswoman Jackie Skaggs says it appears the man was struck by lightening and then fell off of a cliff. Rangers were able to rescue the 16 other climbers who were injured in yesterday's storm. Skaggs says it was one of the largest and most complicated rescue efforts in Grand Teton history.
"With all that was involved, the finesses of two helicopters operating in different locations on the mountain, four ambulances at the base and then 20-30 rangers, park staff and EMTs who were helping the injured people and getting them to medical help in Jackson."
The climber who died was from Iowa. Of the other 16 people brought down from the mountain, Skaggs says none is in critical condition. Most were treated for injuries associated with lightening strikes.
