(wpr) - A bill that would disallow texting on Wyoming highways has been approved by the State Senate's Transportation Committee. The bill makes it a misdemeanor for those who text and drive. It's the third time the legislature has considered such a bill and Committee Chairman Michael Von Flatern says that since the issue has been in the headlines this could be the year it passes.
"It is a great distraction; nobody would probably argue that it isn't a distraction. But whether the personal freedom issue will arise and kill the bill I don't know. It has in the past. But now I believe it has the best chance it's ever had to pass."
Wyoming Highway Patrol Colonel Sam Powell told the committee that such a bill would be difficult to enforce, but he believes most citizens would try to obey the law. The bill now heads to the Senate floor for debate.
