Sweetwater County voters approve board expansion
(2009-11-03)
(wpr) - Sweetwater County voters have expanded their county commission. 79 percent of those voting supported increasing the number of commissioners from three to five. Supporter Mike Martin says he was surprised that as many as 30 percent of the voters turned out for this single ballot issue.
"I knew people were upset. I knew there were some issues with the county commission. But to have almost three times as many turn out for this election as we expected, I think shows a lot more hesitation with our present county commissions."
Martin says by increasing the board from three to five will eliminate the opportunity for two people to control the agenda. Voters will elect their new commissioners during the general election in 2010.
